2001 saw GB women retain a World Championships title for the first time – the lightweight pair. But after the immense achievement of the openweight quad’s winning GB women’s first Olympic rowing medal in Sydney in 2000, the openweights didn’t medal at all under new coach Paul Thompson.

2001 also turned out to be Guin Batten’s last World Championships (although she didn’t fully retire until 2003). Her rowing story is one of extraordinary perseverance in the face of all sorts of setbacks.
